By chance, a collision of two galaxies has created a visually recognizable shape on a cosmic scale - The Cartwheel Galaxy. The Cartwheel is approximately 500 million light-years away in the constellation Sculptor. The vibrant purple rim around the galaxy is 100,000 light years in diameter and is composed of newly formed massive and very bright stars.

Around 100 million years ago, NGC 3310 is supposed to have collided witha smaller galaxy, causing the large spiral glaxy to light up with a tremendous burst while forming stars. The changing gravity during the collision created density waves that compressed existing clouds of gas and triggered the star-forming party. MGC 3310 is 50 million light - years away and is generally visible with a telescope in the direction of the constellation

The Red Spider planetary nebula is a 2-lobed symmetrical planetary nebula housing one of the hottest white dwarfs ever observed, probably as part of a binary system. Internal winds emanating from the central stars expand the nebula, flow along the nebula's walls, and cause waves of gas dust to collide. Atoms caught in these colliding shocks radiate light; a spectacular display of cloud like gases.

The Martian crater Galle has internal markings reminiscent of a smiley face symbol. Such markings were originally discovered in the late 1970s in pictures taken by the orbiter Viking. A large meteor impacted the Martian surface to form the crater. Conventional wisdom holds that the markings inside the crater are placed by chance by natural processes.

Visible meteors are typically sand-sized grains of ice and rock that once fragmented from comets. Many a meteor shower has been associated with a known comet, although some intriguing orphan showers do remain. Recently, a group of meteor enthusiasts created a network of over 100 video cameras placed at 25 well-separated locations across Japan. This unprecedented network recorded not only 240,000 optically bright meteors over two years, but almost 40,000 meteors seen by more than one station. These multiple-station events were particularly interesting because they enabled the observers to extrapolate meteor trajectories back into the Solar System. The resulting radiant map is shown above, with many well known meteor showers labelled by the first three letters of the home constellation. Besides known meteor showers, eleven new showers were identified by new radiants on the sky from which meteors appear to flow. The meteor sky is ever changing, and it may be possible that new shower radiants will appear in the future. Research like this could also potentially identify previously unknown comets or asteroids that might one day pass close to the Earth.

When the EGRET instrument on the orbiting Compton Gamma-ray Observatory surveyed the sky in the 1990s it catalogued 271 celestial sources of high-energy gamma rays. Researchers identified some with exotic black holes, neutron stars, and distant flaring galaxies. But 170 of the catalogued sources remain unidentified.
